Mother’s Day Gift – My Unusual Gift To My Mother and Grandmother

My mother and her mother had a difficult relationship.  I don’t think either person got what they each wanted and perhaps needed most from each other.

My Grandmother, I think, wanted a beautiful, and very feminine girl who would want to develop many wonderful social talents.  And my mother just wanted to be loved for what she knew counted most in life, a good, even beautiful heart.

Still, I know my mother loved her mother.  And her mother loved her.

Mom said the only time she remembers her mother smiling at her as a child was when she had presented her mother with a hand drawn and written Mother’s Day card.  It was a connection!  Albeit brief.

My mom lives, for the most part,  a solitary life.  Some would even consider her a hermit. My grandmother, Mimi, was a concert pianist prior to marriage and for a good 40 years thereafter was a prominent Boston socialite.  Mom loves to be reading outside in the fresh air, getting her hands dirty in her garden and wearing stripes and plaids. My grandmother would rather play golf at the club and wear her heavenly french perfume, with a gorgeous chiffon blouse with cascading ruffles.

My grandmother has been gone just over ten years now.  I miss her terribly.  One thing though, that makes me smile and feel happy inside is something she and my mom had in common and perhaps never even realized.  Believe it or not, it’s scarves!  Although, very different people, with vastly different taste in clothing, they both loved beautiful things of all kinds.  A small but important part of that was their silk scarves, which they collected, wore and treasured through the years.

I think that my grandmother would have really appreciated this little portal I just made of my favorite scarf tying techniques:

Knowing how to wear scarves, is a very important aspect of using this fashion accessory.

When you are able make a great tie for a beautiful scarf, it transforms the scarf and your overall look into something very special. Fortunately, my mom can use these instructions for a long time to come and hopefully you can too!
